Summary

This past weekend our sailors made the trip down to the College of Charleston for the Phebe Cockran King Memorial Regatta, an all-women’s regatta where they competed against 12 other teams. They started the weekend sailing in about 10 knots of breeze which decreased over the course of the Saturday. Sunday was similarly light with about 6 knots of breeze throughout the day and the team ended the weekend with a 9th place finish. All in all, it was a great opportunity to brush off the rust and spend some time in the sun!

SUMMARY

Michigan sailors competed at Kennedy Cup at the Naval Academy in the academy’s fleet of 44 sloops. The first day of racing started slow. There was a fleeting Southerly breeze causing a postponement to start the regatta. After a race was abandoned, the PRO Paul Clissold was able to complete two races for the day in 4-7 knots. The team adjusted to the current and different boat and prepared for the next day.

Sunday’s wind was much more favorable for racing. Race Committee had moved up the start time an hour in order to take full advantage of the strong Westerly wind and make up for lost time due to Saturday’s lack of wind. Four more races were sailed on Sunday. The competition was fierce and the Wolverines learned a lot. This was a great opportunity for Michigan sailors to compete against some of the best keelboat teams in the nation!

SUMMARY

The Wolverines traveled to Michigan State University to compete at Cedarfest. On Saturday, the team faced puffy 7-11 knot winds. The team worked hard to pay attention to the wind and connect the puffs. Race Committee completed 4 races in each division before a storm came in and racing was cancelled for the day. Consistency proved to be key as the team’s nearly all top 3 finishes placed the team in 1st overall going into Sunday. Sunday’s wind was much stronger and shiftier. Race Committee only got off one set before the wind was deemed too extreme for racing. Overall, B fleet won their division and the team placed 2nd overall!

A Michigan team was also sent to the University of Notre Dame to compete at the Shamrock Scramble. The regatta started on Saturday in 8-10 knot breeze. Throughout the day, the breeze picked up along with some rain. By the end of the day Race Committee completed 6 races in A division and 5 races in B division. The team did well in the wind and had almost all top 5 finishes! Day 2 began with a strong Westerly wind, but it quickly started dying. The regatta ended with a total of 10 races in each division. The Wolverines placed 4th overall!

The wind varied with some shifty conditions and breeze ranging from 3-10 knots. Race Committee completed all 12 races and concluded the regatta on Saturday. Michigan sailors had a lot of fun sailing and won some races! The team ended up placing 4th/6th overall. This was a great opportunity for some of our women sailors to gain more experience!

SUMMARY

The women’s team traveled to St. Mary’s College of Maryland on the weekend of October 12/13th. The first day of racing started off with a postponement. Eventually, race committee got the sailors on the water to take advantage of any fleeting wind. Race committee managed to get 5 races off in each division. The wolverines stayed focused in the light conditions and were in 7th at the end of the day. The second day of racing provided similar winds with a light Northeast 3-7 knot breeze. There were another 5 races in each division. Despite the challenging light and shifty conditions, the team had many top 5 finishes! The team ended the regatta in 9th overall.

The coed team traveled to Salve Regina University in Newport on the weekend of October 19/20th. On Saturday, the first few sets were sailed in a lighter Northwesterly breeze. This proved to be the team’s forte, as the Wolverines were winning the regatta after the first 5 races! After these first few sets, a strong Southwest 13-16 knot breeze filled in which made it easy for race committee to complete a total of 10 races in each division. The following day another 5 races were held in a dying Northerly wind. The Wolverines had a lot of fun at this regatta with some exciting races and sailing Larks for the first time! The team finished 10th overall.

SUMMARY

The first of these regattas was Emma Biagioni. The team traveled to Hope college to compete. The warm, medium wind weekend gave perfect conditions for a first regatta. The team ended up top 3 overall!

The following weekend, the team hosted the Cary Price Memorial Regatta at our very own Baseline Lake! The team used this opportunity to get many sailors on the water; by the end of the weekend, 8 Wolverines sailed in the regatta! The team had a fun time hosting and gaining lots of experience.

The Pere Marquette Regatta was the next weekend. We sent all new members to this regatta! The wind was very strong gusting up to 28 knots, but the team stepped up to the challenge. They worked through the conditions and had some top 5 finishes!

This past weekend, six Michigan sailors traveled to Northwestern University to compete at the Morton Schapiro Phd Regatta. Although there were some postponements on Saturday due to high wind, the Race Committee was able to complete ten races. Overall, the Wolverines placed 5th!

Throughout these 4 regattas, we’ve had eleven team members attend their first regatta! The new member class is very strong and gaining experience quick!

Our young team struggled against the well-trained best teams in the country and went winless after the first day. However, our team quickly learned from day one and was able to take home a win against the University of Wisconsin on Sunday. Wolverines ended up in 16th place. Our team gained valuable team racing experience and are excited to continue practicing!
