ICSA Regattas
The Michigan Sailing Team attended six ICSA dinghy regattas this season. Although the competition at inter-conference regattas is tight, our team is proud to be able to represent the MCSA on the East Coast.
Our first ICSA regatta of the season was the Women’s Atlantic Coast Championship Round 1 hosted by Brown University. Racing was only able to happen on Saturday due to weather, and the team placed 18th.
Our second ICSA regatta was the Open ACC’s regatta hosted by Kings Point. The team finished in 18th place after two full days of racing.
Our third ICSA regatta was the Women’s Atlantic Coast Tournament hosted by New York Maritime. The team competed fiercely, and finished in 14th place.
During the same weekend, we had another team competing at the David Lee Arnoff Trophy. Due to hazardous weather on Saturday, races were only held on Sunday, and the team took 9th place.
Our fifth ICSA regatta was the Open Atlantic Coast Tournament. The weather was great, and the team finished the weekend in 17th place.
Our final ICSA regatta was the Nickerson Trophy — a regatta for first year sailors. Races were only held on Saturday due to wind conditions, but our group of freshman put up a wonderful 10th place performance.
We are so proud of how all of our teams did at their ICSA regattas this fall, and we are excited for the spring season!
MCSA REGATTAS
This season our team was proud to have both new and old faces competing at MCSA regattas. The team competed at six conference dinghy regattas, including the Cary Price Memorial Regatta, which is hosted by the team at Baseline Lake.
Our first conference regatta was Fall Fury, hosted by the University of Wisconsin. Weather only allowed for sailing on Saturday, but the team was able to take 3rd place overall.
Our second conference regatta of the season was our home regatta, the Cary Price Memorial Regatta. Saturday started with a postponement due to light wind, but races were able to start later in the day. Sunday saw better conditions, and the team finished in 3rd place.
Our next regatta was the Hoosier Regatta hosted by Indiana University. Our team was composed of four freshman members, all competing in their first college regatta. After two full days of racing, our freshman put up a stellar 2nd place finish.
Our fourth conference regatta was Wisco Women’s hosted by the University of Wisconsin. The conditions were wonderful, and the team finished in 4th place.
During the same weekend, we had another team competing at the Cedarfest regatta hosted by Michigan State. We once again saw a wonderful performance by our team, who finished the weekend in 3rd place.
Our final conference regatta of the season was the MCSA Conference Championship, hosted by the University of Chicago. No races were held on Saturday due to 50+ knot winds. After a long day of racing on Sunday, the team placed 5th to finish off the season.
We are so proud of all of our sailors who competed at MCSA regatta during the season, and we can’t wait to see what the spring has in store for our team!
singlehanded regattas
The Michigan Sailing Team was proud to have three sailors represent us at the MCSA Singlehanded Championship regatta this season. The regatta was held in Madison, WI, on September 17th, 2022. In the women’s division, we had Christi Scheibner and Luci Solorzano, who sailed the ILCA 6. Scheibner took 3rd place, and Solorzano took 4th place. In the men’s division, Billy Vogel sailed the ILCA 7. After a long day of consistent racing, Vogel secured his 1st place victory and a spot at the ICSA Men’s Singlehanded National Championship.
In November, Vogel traveled to Old Dominion University in Norfolk, VA to compete at nationals. This regatta saw the nation’s top singlehanded skippers, and we were so proud to have one of our very own competing. Over the course of the weekend, 14 races were completed. Competition was fierce sailing against the country’s best, and Vogel ended the weekend in 18th place. We are so proud of him for being able to represent the University of Michigan on college sailing’s biggest stage for singlehanded sailors, and we hope to see him back next year!
Keelboat Regattas
This season, the Michigan Sailing Offshore Team competed at three Keelboat regattas.
In September, the team traveled to Chicago to complete in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Offshore Regatta. This year, the team competed in the Tartan-10 fleet. After two full days of racing, the team finished in 3rd place.
In October, the team traveled to Long Island to compete in the Intercollegiate Offshore Regatta. The team competed in the PHRF Large fleet, and placed 6th.
In November, the team traveled to the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland to compete at the Kennedy Cup. The Kennedy Cup is held on the Naval Academy’s Navy-44 boats, and the weather for this year was perfect. After two full days of racing, the team finished in 9th place.
