Summary
The Michigan Sailing Team hosted the MCSA Women's Championship Regatta for the second year in a row!
Saturday started off with heavy winds and rain, and continued throughout the morning. Eventually the rain stopped, but wind picked up resulting in lots of capsizing and fast racing. We were able to complete the ten races in each division required for a complete event on Saturday, so racing on Sunday was canceled.
Wisconsin took 1st place followed by Michigan in 2nd, Notre Dame in 3rd, and Minnesota in 4th. Congratulations to these four teams, as their finishes earned them a spot at the ICSA Women's Nationals this May!

Banquet 2018 - A Year in Review
The team spent Thursday evening enjoying each other's company at Jolly Pumpkin in Ann Arbor, Michigan! We were able to reflect on the past year's accomplishments, hear from our seniors, and award our sailors with our annual team awards! We would love to share the highlights with you!

Summary
Our first home regatta of the season started out with cold temperatures in the low thirties and frozen sheets! Saturday's early report time was met with lots of hot water, antifreeze, and patience as we unfroze our fleet to start the Big Ten Team Race. We hosted two Wisconsin teams, two Northwestern teams, and two Marquette teams this weekend.
The wind started out at 10mph in the morning, then built in the afternoon. Races were run through the afternoon, and we finally got off the water around 5:30pm after completing a full round robin and nearly a complete Top 4, Bottom 4.
We started the morning with the last race of the Bottom 4 in light winds after thawing the mainsheets over the fire. Wind was light and shifty on the second day, but we were able to complete a second Top 4 and Bottom 4 to finalize the event.
Overall, Wolverines 1 took first place and Wolverines 2 took fifth place. We are very appreciative of our race committee and volunteers, and we are looking forward to hosting Women's Quals next weekend!

This past weekend, April 7-8, four Michigan sailors traveled to Ohio State University to compete in the 2018 Buckeye Interconference at Hoover Sailing Club.
On Saturday, April 7, the Wolverines raced in three rotations, with the A fleet team finishing the day in first place and B fleet team in third place. Overall, the team was tied for second place at the end of the day. The wind was light and very shifty throughout the day with a maximum speed of about 8 knots.

On Sunday, the sailors competed in two rotations. During the first rotation, the wind continued to shift dramatically, but there was slightly more pressure than on Saturday. The wind died out again in the second rotation. Overall, the Wolverines got third place, with the A fleet team (G. Glover and M. Moores) in first, B fleet (M. Ellsworth and K. Doyle) in fourth place.

This past weekend, March 29- April 1, four Michigan sailors went to Macatawa Bay Yacht Club to compete in the Laker Showdown. On Saturday, A fleet sailed in one rotation before the wind speed escalated to 40 knots and races were canceled for the rest of the day. Skipper G. Glover (‘19) and crew J. McClellan (‘21) got second and third place in each respective race.
On Sunday, the wind was a more tame 10-12 knots with shifts up to thirty degrees. B fleet started the day off with two races putting the Wolverines in third place. Over the course of three total rotations for the weekend, the Wolverines ended the regatta in fifth place.

Over the weekend of March 24-25, thirteen first-year sailors traveled to Notre Dame to compete in the annual First-Year Icebreaker regatta. On Saturday, the temperature was a brisk forty degrees at St. Joseph Lake. The lake had gusts ranging from about 8 to 20 knots and had shifts throughout the course ranging from a few degrees to ninety degrees. A fleet sailed eight races while B fleet sailed six races. The Michigan Wolverines A1 team, skippered by Allison Marozza (‘21), finished out the day in first place, while the Wolverines B1 fleet, skippered by Sarah Youtt (‘21), finished the first day in second place behind Notre Dame.
Sunday’s weather was slightly warmer with more sunshine and lighter winds in the morning. The wind in the first two rotations was a fairly steady eight knots with gusts up to 12 knots. However, as the day progressed, the wind returned to similar conditions as Saturday. The Wolverines A1 team continued to increase their lead over the rest of the A fleet, while the Wolverines B1 team gained points on Notre Dame throughout the races.

During the third B fleet race of the day, Wolverines B1 fouled Notre Dame in a starboard-port situation and completed their penalty turns. During the fourth B fleet race of the day, the Notre Dame B1 team fouled the Wolverines B2 team, skippered by Max Ellsworth (‘21), in a simple windward-leeward situation on the start line and failed to complete their 720. Therefore, M. Ellsworth protested the Notre Dame team.
After the B fleet sailors were off the water, the Notre Dame 1 skipper notified S. Youtt that they were protesting her due to “failure to complete turns soon enough.” Then, Notre Dame A1 team notified A. Marozza that they were protesting her for a windward-leeward foul at the final start, which both A. Marozza and J. Orhan were unaware of committing.
With Notre Dame two points ahead of Wolverines team 1, the ruling in the protest room would determine the winner of the regatta. After pleading their cases, both M. Ellsworth and S. Youtt won their protests, disqualifying Notre Dame B1 team from one of the races. However, A. Marozza was disqualified, as the judge ruled in favor of the Notre Dame A1 team.
In the end, the Wolverines team 1 got second place, with Wolverines A1 (A. Marozza, J. Orhan, and M. Vandervest) winning A fleet, Wolverines B1 (S. Youtt, M. Carroll, and J. Gagnon) getting second place in B fleet, and Wolverines B2 (M. Ellsworth, M. Moores, and P. Ryan) getting third place in B fleet.
Overall, the First-Year Icebreaker regatta was an excellent chance for first-year sailors to kick off the spring season and exercise their knowledge about fleet racing (and protests!).

Regatta Report: Friis Trophy Team Race

Summary
Over the weekend we sent six sailors to Bristol, Rhode Island to compete in the Friis Team Race hosted by Roger Williams University.
On Saturday morning a light Northwesterly wind oscillated between the West and the North for the majority of the day. In the afternoon races were canceled due to the lack of wind.
That night the team cheered on their fellow Wolverines as the basketball team made it to the Final Four.
Sunday was a cold day for sailing. The mid to high teens Northerly breeze brought in the occasional snow flurries. Overall, the team learned a lot this weekend sailing against some of the top teams in the country. The competition was steep but with it brought lessons that our sailors will bring back to Ann Arbor. We are excited to continue practicing our team race strategy.
We are so thankful for our hosts, who took in our sailors pretty last minute. We wouldn't be able to compete all over the country without them! Go Blue!

Regatta Report: Admiral Moore Team Race

Summary
We sent six sailors to New York this weekend to compete at the Admiral Moore Team Race Regatta. The team got a lot of good team racing practice in, as they kept up with each team at the event.
On Saturday, one round robin was completed, as the wind died throughout the day from 15 knots to nearly 0 knots. We had a race thrown out due to no wind while we were on the second upwind of the race. Overall, we had pretty successful Saturday of sailing.
Saturday evening, our sailors went into New York City to watch the Michigan Basketball game! To celebrate the big win, we roamed around Time's Square and explored New York City, making a new friend (pictured to the left)!
Sunday brought heavier winds and stronger current as we finished out the second round robin and ending the regatta. We are looking forward to using the experience to practice our team racing before Team Race Quals in April.
We are so thankful to our hosts for giving our sailors a place to sleep and feeding them while we competed at this event.

March's Michigan Sailor of the Month
Introducing our March Sailor of the Month, Amy Baer!
Amy is a junior studying Computer Science and one of co-captains. She is a top crew and has represented our team at both dinghy and keelboat events. She qualified for Women's Nationals, placed 1st at GLIOR, and was recognized as an MCSA all-conference crew. She has served as an integral member of our team for the past three years, propelling the team to success in a multitude of events across the country.
In addition to her sailing experience, Amy is an admirable leader on the team, serving as the Rec Sports Chair last year and a co-captain this year. She handles many of the team’s operations behind the scenes, and, without her, our team would not be able to function. Her hard work, dedication, and positive attitude makes her a role model for everyone on the team. Thank you for all you do, Amy!

Summary
We sent six sailors over to Connecticut College this weekend to race in the Southern New England Team Race regatta. Over the course of two days, the team completed two round robins in fairly cold conditions and variable wind. We managed to get some good racing in as we look to practice our team racing! What a fun way to spend St. Patrick's Day weekend on the East Coast!
