Racing began on Saturday with a 5-7 knot Southerly breeze. Throughout the day, the breeze built and ended with full-on hiking. The second day had similar conditions. Our young team struggled against the well-trained best teams in the country and went winless after the first day. However, our team quickly learned from day one and was able to take home a win against the University of Wisconsin on Sunday. Wolverines ended up in 16th place. Our team gained valuable team racing experience and are excited to continue practicing!

SUMMARY
Our sailors arrived on Tuesday ready for the first day of nationals. The whole day had strong, consistent breeze from the Northwest. The wind and current made for some chop and waves. Our sailors competed in FJs. Race Committee completed 8 races for both divisions. The racing ended around 7, making for a long day on the water. Our sailors had a fun first day, and rested up for the following day of competing.
Wednesday began with similar strong breeze, this time coming more from the North. Wolverines sailed 420s for the day. After the first set, the wind began to die. The next set proved to be very challenging for all of the competitors as the breeze died and the fighting current quickened. After a slight delay, the final race in each division was sailed in sea breeze coming from the South. Our sailors were back to full-on hiking and the wind made for an exciting end to the regatta.
Overall, our sailors enjoyed Newport’s great venue and sailing conditions. Our sailors had some great moments with top 5 finishes! Wolverines finished 15th overall. Now time for Team Race Nationals!

SUMMARY
Wolverines arrived at Grosse Point Yacht Club Saturday morning. After a brief chalk talk, our two team race teams hit the water with three other teams from the MCSA. Although the rain made for some cold weather, the wind was a nice 8-10 knots and our teams were very productive. In the morning, we practiced pass backs and starting. After a lunch break, we practiced many full races.
Sunday’s weather of freezing temperatures and high wind prevented us from sailing. However, we were able learn and answer lots of questions during chalk talks. Our team learned a lot this weekend and is looking forward to our upcoming team race regattas!

With better conditions, our Wolverine 1 A fleet was able to maintain their lead and finished the competition in 1st. Our Wolverine 1 B fleet team also won their division with an impressive score of all firsts. Both teams had fun and improved a lot over the weekend!
